Best Electric Shaver to Buy in 2018

Trying to get your hands on the best electric shaver online can get pretty tricky since there are so many alternatives and such a gigantic price gap between them. This is where we come in.

Among a variety of products that I have tested or written on, electric razors and electric shavers are quite complicated. The reason is that in other products you can weigh everything objectively upon the features offered. However, in the case of shavers it gets much more subjective. Every person has a different skin so every product could react differently to them. An electric shaver that a tester found to give smooth skin later might give me a coarse one.

This is why we suggest that before digging in to the choices you should first get to know your own skin and filter what types of electric shavers you actually need.

Best Electric Shaver in 2018

In our list though, we have included everything from economical options to the premium ones, and from the pre-decided best electric shaver to the new products that claim to be better. Each of these products have been tested for a variety of aspects like foil movements, multi-directional movements, batteries and charging, docks and other value adding features.

Braun Series 9 9290cc

Premium Quality, Premium Price

Nothing short of a Braun shaver could prove itself worthy to be called the best electric shaver of 2018. The premium Series 9 shavers bring you the closest of shaves, with the smoothest of results and some of the top notch features that one can ask for.

It is true that the Braun Series 9 will have an impact on the wallet more than the rest. However, with its five cutting elements, waterproofing and up to 50 minutes of battery time. This is the top of the high end.

Remington F5-5800

Affordable and Reliable

With the Intercept Shaving Technology, you get a very smooth shave and it performs well in multi-directional usage as well. All this for a quarter of the price that you would have to pay for some of the best electric shavers out there.

You are getting the most bang for your buck in this one, and if your skin isn’t too sensitive you might not even need to buy any thing more expensive than this.

Braun Series 7 760cc

The Braun Series 7 760cc has been all the rage for a while now. Among those of you who have tried and tested some shavers, you would know that this definitely is among the best if not the best electric shaver itself.

Premium price for an electric razor can go well past a few bucks and in comparison the Braun shaver is quite low priced. There also is the Braun series 9, but it is a major set back to your wallet. We have had other better performing ones, but all our testers agree that 760cc does its job well.

A cleaning system is a major requirement for some while for others it might not be a prerequisite. The Series 7 comes with a cleansing and charging base and with a five point adjustable speed. It is almost like a razor blade that works well on both dry and wet shaving.

All this means you are getting a lot of options to choose your preference an even the battery doesn’t take longer than an hour to reach full power.

Foil shavers are regarded as one of the best electric shavers out there as they provide a closer shave. However, to some of you the difference might be nominal.

If you were to choose between a Wahl shaver, a Norelco shaver and a Braun shaver, we would have to say it is a tie. Since we would not pick the one best electric shaver from among them, we suggest you look at the price to decide.

Pros

  • Good Value for Money
  • Foil Allows Closer Shave
  • Cleansing and Charging Stand

Cons

  • Tough to Clean Manually
  • Not the Closest of Shaves
  • More Suited to Sensitive Skin

Remington F5-5800

Definitely the best electric shaver that come with a budget, the Remington F5-5800 ticks most of the features you would expect in the best electric razors and hair trimmers. The Remington shavers have had a legendary status so far which is why this is a solid pick.

Obviously we are not saying that it performs as well as a Braun Series 9 or any top notch Braun shaver for that matter. But it also doesn’t cost as much does it?

It handles movements in multiple directions pretty well through a trimmer and two foils, but in order to get you this quality Remington shredded the docking piece.

You can use it with the cord or without one, for which a two hour charge will be required. As far as the company’s claims are concerned it will last you 60 minutes of shaving time.

The Remington shaver also deals well with Sensitive areas and thanks to a detail trimmer that pops up on demand, you get to give it an extra final touch as well. It is however just a dry shaver despite being a completely waterproof one.

Do keep in mind that our testers do not recommend this for those of you who have a sensitive skin.

Pros

  • Cheapest of The Lot
  • Good Value for Asking Price
  • Cord and Cordless

Cons

  • Not Suitable for Sensitive Skin
  • No Dock

Panasonic ES-LV65-S Arc 5

Back to the foil shavers. Its been the case for a long time that the best electric shaver would either belong to Braun or Panasonic, and rightly so. Even now that Braun shavers lead the race, this Panasonic shaver sounds really promising.

The first thing that Panasonic is proud of in Arc 5 is how close it can cut the shave. This beast has five cutting elements to ensure that nothing is left behind and each of them have some really sharp blades.

Each of those blades cuts 14000 times per minute thanks to a Hyper Performance linear drive motor leaving no unruly hair to itself. That being said, Panasonic follows Braun shavers to give you pivoting heads and an arched design for the foils.

For the clumsy ones among us, you can use it on dry surfaces as well as wet surfaces.

Clearly, the only problem is going to be the price if you are not looking for top end products because the Panasonic ES-LV65-S Arc 5 is expensive; but worth it.

Pros

  • One of the Closest Shaves
  • Fully Loaded with Accessories
  • Impressive Design

Cons

  • Quite Expensive

Philips Norelco Shaver 9300

The first Norelco shaver that we picked for this article was the 9300 although there were other variants of the model too. However, the Philips shaver has manged to prove its position thanks to its really efficient rotary style.

Not everyone prefers the foil shavers over rotary styled ones, and while we still believe foil produces a better result the performance of this one has been exceptional.

There are some skin types that do not bode well with the flat bar shaped foil design. There also are people who have complained of skin irritation form foil based shavers and would reject even the best electric shaver for that matter. If you are one of those people, go no further than the Philips Norelco Shaver 9300.

The three floating heads atop the 9300 allow you to pivot it in more ways letting you trace the facial lines more thoroughly. You are okay to take it to the head, the chin, neck and so on.

Also just in case you are taking too long someday, there are LED bars on the grip that keep track of the battery remaining alongside a cleaning indicator and a head change indicator.

Obviously, too much movement of the rotaries means that the shave will not be as close as some would want. and you also have to manually remove the head to replace the trimmer, and on frequent uses that could turn laborious.

Pros

  • Three Movable Rotaries Allow More Coverage
  • Cleansing Tools
  • LED Indicators

Cons

  • Only Suitable to Rotary Preference
  • Trimmer Replacement is Laborious
  • Shave Isn’t as Smooth as Foils

Braun Series 9 9290cc

It looks like just one Braun shaver was not enough so here’s the Braun series 9 for those of you who want nothing but the best electric shaver, and for whatever price. Alongside the Panasonic Arc 5 this is among the most expensive options available, but Braun’s quality is worth it.

You get a moving head that can be locked an also set to pivot according to the region that you want to shave. Just like the Arc 5, it also has five cutting elements for an extra close shave. Not only that, there is an adaptive motor that pushes more power when the hair gets dense so that the shave is even.

Like most of the Braun electric shavers, this one is also waterproof but takes it a notch further. Now you have no worries if it is submerged up to 15 feet in the water!

Other than that, there is a battery indicator on the grip that lets you know how much of the 50 minutes of full charge have you consumed at any given point.

We hardly have a doubt that the best electric shaver also deserves the best price tag, and Braun knows that too. This bad boy is going to set you back something between 200 to 300 bucks.

Pros

  • Premium Quality
  • Waterproof
  • Closest and Smoothest Shave

Cons

  • Quite Expensive

Braun Series 3 3040s ProSkin

We believe for a person with a sensitive skin, the best electric shaver will be the one that doesn’t irritate them. It wouldn’t matter what brand it is, it also wouldn’t matter how much it costs. The Braun Series 3 3040s ProSkin, as the name suggests, is made to order for such people.

It gets even better because although the usual Braun shavers are priced around the higher end meaning you might need to spend more than you would want for the sake of quality. That is not the case with the Series 3 ProSkin can come home for less than a 100 bucks.

Some less impressive elements might be how it is unable to shave as close as an Arc model from Panasonic shavers. Or the fact that if you have coarse hair you might find it straining unlike the Braun series 9; it is a slightly under-powered model.

We are also not suggesting it to anyone other than people with sensitive skin and easy going hair. It is a wet and dry usage model with shaving heads that are cheaper than the rest.

Our testers found that the en result was rather smooth and the process was simple suggesting a greater value for beginners. Among budget products, what makes it the best electric shaver for 2018 is the good value for money it offers.

Pros

  • Quality of Braun
  • Good Value
  • Wet and Dry Use

Cons

  • Not the Closest of Shaves
  • Slightly Underpowered

Buyer’s Guide

The worst as well as the best electric shaver is based on one of two cutting mechanisms. Either they are using rotary shavers or foil based ones. In an rotary, you see two or three circular heads with spinning blades underneath. The heads mostly have pivoting functionality.

On the other hand the foil shavers are much more consistent with a flat mesh of metal covering the blades. Usually this cutting technique is more uniform and more friendly towards sensitive skin.

Especially when looking for a close cut, if the shaver has too many hair in it you might not be able to get the desired shave due to clogging of the blade area. The better an electric shaver is in quality, the easier it will be to manage those loose hair.

If the shaver is waterproof you will simply be able to rinse it through with water, if not, it will be a rather laborious task. It is better if the shaver has a cleansing kit or at least a compartment for the loose hair.

Once again it depends more on your type of usage. You’d definitely want one that works with batteries if you are going to use it while travelling. Same is the case if you hate wires. Obviously this will come at the cost of you having to regularly charge the batteries. A full charge usually lasts below 60 minutes.

On the flipside, a plugged in electric shaver needs a power outlet wherever you want to use it. As far as we are concerned, you should be preferring the battery type.

Is a wet or dry shave better?
The people who do a wet shave are almost always removing a thin layer of skin with the shave which means they are prone to irritation. On the other hand a dry shave clears the area without touching the skin. This in some cases also results in the shave being less close.

In terms of electric shavers, it depends on the product you are using. Even the best electric shaver today will offer both dry an wet shaving. Yet, there are a number of notable ones that only let you shave dry. Pick the product you’ll prefer.

Are electric shavers better than razors?
Razor cartridges have been preferred for a long time based on the fact that they give you a closer shave. However, there are a number of other issues related to this. Like getting cuts as well as in-grown hair on the skin. Not only that, razors are known to cause a lot more irritation as compared to electric shavers. Our suggestion is that you go for an electric shaver that promises a very close shave if that is what you are after.
