Not that we aren’t a fan of Fanatec or Hori. In our reviewing process, the testers have not only gone through the fan famous products but also any and all competition they have. Thrustmaster T300RS

The Force Feedback is Strong With This One!

Logitech G920 and Thrustmaster T300RS were head to head but the latter takes lead for having a more solid force feedback and a 1080 degree rotation. All packed in quality material.

If we had to pick one it would definitely be the Thrustmaster T300 because not only does it offer more value for money, it is also much cheaper than the Fanatec model. Honestly, it manages to pull in most of the features of the Fanatec wheel too!

HORI Racing Wheel

Looks like a Thrustmaster, Costs Five Times Less!

If you do not want to spend more than a 100 bucks and care less about force feedback and rotation. HORI Apex and HORI Overdrive can complete your basic set up for PS4, PC and Xbox One for a lot less.

It doesn’t have the rotation of a Logitech G920 and also doesn’t have the force feedback quality of Thurstmaster T300 RS. Yet, lets not compare it with those; you get what you pay for and this is at best an arcade based wheel that is belt driven.

Logitech G920 / Logitech G29 Driving Force

The Logitech racing wheel that is in the news for being one of the best racing wheels in the market comes in two variants. It is basically the same racing steering wheel only with different versions for compatibility with the PS4 and the Xbox One.

Logitech G920 Racing Wheel

G920 is the name of the Xbox One steering wheel variant that is made by the company. This is by far one of the only three names that come to my mind when I think of the best Xbox One racing wheel.

We were clearly surprised at some of the largely negative sentiments about the model that people had. This is so because in our tests we found the Logitech G920 to work flawlessly with our Forza 7. Not only does it have some of the better features of the previous version i.e. the G25 and G27, but also adds some features.

For instance, you now get a strong force feedback wheel that speaks volumes of quality with its leather topping. Not only that, the motor mechanism of the Logitech racing wheel is above average.

Logitech G29 Steering Wheel

Since both the models are the same and they have only been given different names, the pros and cons of each are the same whether it is the Logitech G920 or the PS4 steering wheel. We know that Gran Turismo is the bet PS4 racing game, and that it needs to be driven with some decent pedals. This is precisely the reason why we think the best PS4 steering wheel is Logitech G29 steering wheel.

Logitech even manages to improve on what Thundermaster offers. For instance, with the G29 steering wheel you get the best bundled pedals for the PS4. Similarly Xbox One steering wheel and pedals come together if you buy the Logitech G920.

There is hardly anything stopping them from becoming one of the best racing wheels out there, except for the edgy feeling you get from the force feedback wheel. The Thrustmaster T300 RS is able to get over that, but then again it is more expensive too.

Technical Specifications:

  • Rotation: 900 degrees
  • Feedback type: Force Feedback
  • Drive type: Helical gears
  • Compatibility: PS4/PS3/PC/Xbox One

  • Strong Force Feedback Wheel
  • Good Value For Money
  • High-quality Pedals
  • Impressive Leather Topped Wheel Design

  • Feedback is Slightly Edgy Due to Gear System
  • Good value
  • Impressive design

Fanatec CSL Elite

Another impressive product that we came across looking for the best racing wheels was the Fanatec CSL Elite steering wheel. Regardless of the fact that Fanatec is probably the most sought after racing wheels maker out there, we think this wheel actually deserves all the praise.

The point where we got sold was how solid and smooth the force feedback is, and how they are offering such high levels of customization. You can get upgrades too, but they are expensive and as a result you’ll be spending much more on the Fanatec wheel than you actually wanted.

We stuck with what Amazon delivered, just like we had done with the Fanatec direct drive model. It comes in different versions for the Xbox One and the PS4 as well as a slightly less expensive PC variant.

It was impressive how some of the best racing wheels can compete each other at exceedingly high quality. The Fanatec wheel has better force feedback than the Thrustermaster T300 RS. Its faster, it is more accurate. You also get a rev counter with games as well as a reliable wheel base.

Now do keep in mind that this is arguably the most expensive company out there. In comparison with that, the CSL Elite model is actually an affordable release. Not that it has any effect on our spending amount, but if you did decide to spend on it, we believe you’ll be making a good value deal.

Technical Specifications:

  • Rotation: 1080 degrees
  • Feedback type: Force Feedback
  • Drive type: Belt
  • Compatibility: PS4/PS3/PC, Xbox One

  • Smooth and Powerful Force Feedback Wheel
  • Great Customization
  • Impressive Pedals

  • Very Expensive
  • Expensive Upgrades
  • No Rumble

Thrustmaster T300RS / Thrustmaster TX Ferrari 458

Although the Thrustmaster T-GT is a custom made steering wheel for Gran Turismo Sport and also a licensed PS4 steering wheel. The T-GT is compatible only with the PS4 and the PC. Therefore, the high-end models of Thrustmaster are our pick so that you can use them on all three platforms.

Everyone knows that these are some of the best racing wheels out there but your question should be how do they compare to the rest. Just like the racing wheel variants, Thrustmaster makes two identical models for compatibility across the Sony platform as well as the Microsoft console namely Thrustmaster T300RS and Thrustmaster TX Ferrari 458 Italia Edition

Thrustmaster T300RS Racing Wheel

Not only is the performance smooth on best PS4 racing game the Thrustmaster T300RS also has compatibility with the PS3 and the PC. The PS4 steering wheel does better at force feedback than the Logitech wheel above. Not only that, a belt system has replaced the old geared system on the Thrustmaster racing wheel.

The Thrustmaster T300RS as well as the Thrustmaster TX both have a 1080 degrees rotation which is more than what is offered by Logitech. Moreover, you’ll favor it even more if you like the feeling of a little rumble as the brush-less motors move inside.

Thrustmaster TX Ferrari 458 Italia Edition

This is the dedicated Xbox One steering wheel that has the identical specifications to the Thrustmaster T300 variant. The realistic sense of the Thundermaster TX is much better than the Thrustmaster T150 as well as the Logitech G29 which is because it has better force feedback wheel mechanism.

We would have really liked it if the company paid attention to the aesthetics and outlook like most of the best racing wheels out there. The racing wheel it self is rubber which is less luxurious and more costly than the Logitech G920. Same is the case with the pedals; there’s too much plastic on them.

Whether you will use the Ferrari steering wheel in its factory settings or upgrade it, is up to you. Some ideas are getting T3PA metal pedals and a gearbox.

Technical Specifications:

  • Rotation: 1080 degrees
  • Feedback type: Force Feedback
  • Drive type: Helical gears
  • Compatibility: PS4/PS3/PC/Xbox One

  • Very Smooth and Strong Force Feedback Wheel
  • 1080p Rotation
  • Durable, Solid Wheel

  • Subpar Plastic Pedals
  • Rubber Wheel
  • Impressive design

HORI Racing Wheel Apex / HORI Racing Wheel Overdrive

Don’t get too confused about multiple names of the same product. It is just how the companies attend to different types of gaming platforms. While almost any racing wheel will also be a PC steering wheel, compatible versions for the PS4 or the Xbox One are released separately. HORI was the fourth company and the sixth and seventh gaming wheel we tested.

The biggest reason why it is here among the best racing wheels? Because it is probably one of the few quality products that come in cheap.

HORI Racing Wheel Apex

Apex is the variant that works with PC as well as PS3 and PS4 platforms. Since is it one of the cheapest racing wheel, there is literally no force feedback. Instead of that, the steering wheel relies solely on the rumble. This could be a turn off for many, but there is more that HORI pulls off.

We are not saying it is for the enthusiasts or the best PS4 racing game, many of the high end Xbox One games will also not feel as good. However, playing arcade games is great on either versions of the HORI racing wheel. We experienced a little bit of resistance from the wheel and some realistic rumble when we hit a barrier.

HORI Overdrive Racing Wheel

With specifications that are identical to the Apex version, the Xbox One exclusive Overdrive offers more of the same. It is comparatively lightweight if put up against the likes of Thrustmaster T150, and has the most number of controller buttons on it.

The best racing wheels offer greater rotation although HORI only does 270 degrees. The pedals are plastic and so are the gear shifters.

Nonetheless, it would be crude to compare this with Logitech G920 or the Thrustmaster T300RS, because it is only an arcade type gaming gear. The toy-like look is usual for those. In the end, if you are going to spend as less as you can, at least do it on a HORI so that it is a company product.

Technical Specifications:

  • Rotation: 270 degrees
  • Feedback type: N/A
  • Drive type: Belt
  • Compatibility: PS4/PS3/PC/Xbox One

  • Very Cheap
  • Belt Driven
  • Arcade Games Focused

  • Filmsy Material
  • Not a Force Feedback Wheel
  • Only 270 Degree Rotation

Thrustmaster T150 Racing Wheel

It is painful how a quality PC steering wheel is never exclusive but consoles get those all the time. Anyhow, here’s another all platformer that performs quite well for its price on all platforms. While the Thrustmaster T300 is a high-end product when it comes to price, the T150 tries to cover the budget buyers.

In simple words, the two versions of T150 are probably the best racing wheels on a budget if we are not considering arcade games. For those of you who didn’t know, Thrustmster T150 and Thrustmaster TMX are basically the same thing. The only difference is that the former is for PS3, PS4 and PC while the latter is an Xbox One exclusive.

It is a force feedback wheel unlike the HORI models above, and does very well in fact. Moreover, the force feedback is not driven solely by a belt instead it uses a helical gear system and a belt hybrid. Since you are paying half the price of a Thrustmaster T300RS, how can there not be features that you will have to ditch.

Lets just say you get a result that will be smooth for the price that you are paying. Similarly, the pedals will not be as great as they are on higher end products; in fact some of our testers believe the same for the entire product.

Technical Specifications:

  • Rotation: 1080 degrees
  • Feedback type: Force Feedback
  • Drive type: Belt and gear
  • Compatibility: PS4/PS3/PC/Xbox One

  • 1080 Degree Rotation
  • Good Value
  • Good Force Feedback Wheel

  • Pedals Could Be Better
  • Average Build
  • Turns Are Notchy

Buyer’s Guide

The realism of a simulation racing game lies within the physical sensation of driving a car like jumps, bumps and hits. These are created by the technology called force feedback by making use of some really strong motors that pull and push to make it feel realistic.

The best racing wheels will be the best at imitation game. In order for that, they will try to give you as much rotation on the wheel as it is possible. These days rotation of up to 1080 degrees is being offered although some of the good steering wheels feel content at 900 degrees as well. Moreover, the size is mostly a standard issue. You’ll probably get an 11 inch diameter, although some racing wheels might alter that a little bit.

There are three major platforms. Therefore, we have not only got Xbox One racing wheels, but also a range of PS4 racing wheels as well as PC racing wheels. The issue is between the PS4 and Xbox One since even the best driving wheels cannot be used interchangeably on both. If you have both consoles you are going to need two separate steering wheels with pedals.

The PC is another story though, you do not need a PC racing wheel separately as almost all of the racing wheels for consoles are compatible with PC.

Should I get racing wheels that have force feedback?
Playing a simulation racer these days is about getting as realistic as possible. So there is a need to incorporate as much of real life effects into the game as possible. The steering wheels gear is there for the same reason and so are force feedback wheels. Force feedback are basically the effects you feel when you hit a car, a barrier or a rough patch in the game.

The best racing wheels will have better effects, and so far force feedback is how they get it better. There isn’t a single good Xbox One steering wheel that doesn’t have the feature and I would say the same about any PS4 steering wheel too.

Can I buy shifters, pedals and steering wheel from different manufacturers and use them on one set up?
The simple answer is yes, but there could be problems. When you are buying individual upgrades to the wheels, do keep in mind that compatibility could be a major issue. While even the best racing wheels allow you to add upgrades, there is no surety that you will not end up with an incompatible rig. This is usually a little tricky. Therefore, before you swipe that card try and make sure that the parts you are buying will work.
